Biddy Mason - What We Do

Written by Super User on . Posted in Uncategorised

The success of the early events became the foundation of the now widely recognized, annual Spring Resource Fair and Thanksgiving Day Dinner.

Too many foster youth are not aware of the variety of services available to them.  Events hosted by the Biddy Mason Charitable Foundation include resources for services and support, clothing, and hygiene items.

Currently we provide support to former foster youth who are college students.  Our purchases have included books, winter clothing and school supplies. We work directly with the financial aid office when there are challenges with tuition.  We also serve as the ear that is always there to listen.

Former foster youth who are homeless often seek support from the Biddy Mason Charitable Foundation.  We have assisted these former foster youth with relocation, job placement and clothing.

Many of these youth now have children of their own.  All events include clothing for toddlers and young children.

As a result of the extensive network of collaborative partners the foundation has embraced, we are able to refer a variety of services to former foster youth.

Ernestine Campbell makes crochet items for foster youth.  Each year she brings handmade crochet items to the annual Resource Fair.  She talks with Foster Youth and explains the different scarves, hats, shawls she makes especially for foster youth.

In our conversations and relationships with foster youth the universal theme the reoccurs is the need for education and a support team.

Biddy Mason - Who was Biddy Mason

"An open hand is a blessed for it gives in abundance, even as it receives.”

Biddy Mason

The Biddy Mason Charitable Foundation is named for, Bridgett “Biddy” Mason the organizer of First AME Church of Los Angeles.  A former slave, Biddy Mason was able to secure her freedom when she petitioned a Los Angeles Court and in 1856 was granted her freedom.

She became a legendary figure in the early Los Angeles Community not only for her astute business acumen but for her philanthropy.  She founded a school and orphanage.   Her home on North Spring Street was a refuge for many destitute settlers.   She cared for the sick and became a mentor for many in the early Los Angeles Community.

As a slave she had learned the skill of healing with herbal remedies and midwifery.  These skills proved to be very valuable when she began her life as a free woman.  She began her new life earning $2.50 per week as a nurse.  When she died in 1891 her estate was valued at $300,000.  Today her estate would be valued at approximately $6 million.
